Practical lesson
Common mistakes Data Analysis
Recognize predictable failure patterns and replace them with better habits.
The idea in one minute
Data analysis is a decision-oriented process, not simply producing charts or running software. It begins by clarifying the question and defining the outcome or metric, then locating and understanding the data, checking provenance and quality, cleaning or transforming it transparently, exploring distributions and relationships, applying statistical or causal methods when warranted, and communicating findings with appropriate uncertainty. Good analysis is reproducible enough that another person can trace the inputs, definitions and transformations behind the conclusion.
This capability connects directly with Project Management, AI Evaluation & Benchmarking, Critical Thinking. Open those concepts when the lesson depends on them rather than treating Data Analysis as an isolated ability.
Mistakes that weaken Data Analysis
- 1.Starting with a dashboard or tool before defining the decision question.
- 2.Using a proxy metric without checking whether it represents the outcome that matters.
- 3.Ignoring missing data, duplicates, outliers, changing definitions or broken collection pipelines.
- 4.Confusing correlation or timing with causation.
- 5.Cherry-picking segments or time windows after seeing the result.
- 6.Ignoring denominators, base rates, selection bias or survivorship bias.
- 7.Reporting statistical significance without practical effect size or decision relevance.
- 8.Using a visually impressive chart that distorts scale or hides uncertainty.
- 9.Failing to document transformations, filters, exclusions or assumptions.
- 10.Treating an AI-generated query, chart or explanation as correct without checking it against the source data.
